Topher Bates is originally from the inner-city of St. Louis, MO, and currently lives and works in downtown Chicago, IL. Raised in a single-parent household, in one of the nation’s most violent and impoverished communities, Topher was faced with many of the challenges and opportunities young black men encounter. Prior to receiving his Bachelors of Arts in Corporate Communication and a minor in Organizational Leadership from Purdue University, Topher attended eight different schools, including a JUCO in Kansas (Hutchinson Community College).
Today, Topher is a Vice President in Employee Benefits at USI Insurance Services, a privately held insurance brokerage and consulting firm. His responsibility is to work closely with C-level executives at middle market organizations, specifically helping them combat rising healthcare costs. Prior to USI, Topher was an Employee Benefits Consultant at Gallagher, where his career in the insurance industry began as a Health and Welfare Sales Intern.
For fun, Topher enjoys competing in Ironman triathlons and playing the piano. As an education advocate, he has served as an Intensives Partner at EPIC Academy Charter High School (2013-2019), and the Associate Board Chair at North Lawndale College Prep Charter High School (2013-2019). Topher’s long-term aspiration is to start at Charter High School in an underrepresented community.
